Professor of Hematology
I am Professor of Hematology in Medical School of the University of Patras, Greece. I am the Director of the Bone Marrow Transplantation Unit (BMT) Unit (University Hospital Patras) andfounder and Director of the Institute of Cellular Therapy and CBMDP Donor Centre (University of Patras). After completing my medical studies in University of Thessaloniki/Greece (1992) and my military and rural service in Greece (1993-1995), I joined the Dept. of Hematology/Oncology of the University of Freiburg/Germany (1995-2005) where I completed my PhD Thesis on hematopoietic stem-cell biology (1998), the German Board Certification in Internal Medicine (2002) and in Hematology/Oncology (2003) and awarded the Venia Legendi (2004 I was appointed Assistant Professor (2004) and Full Professor (2015) at the University
of Patras, where I established an Allogeneic Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation Program (www.bmtpatra.gr), the first in Greece “Centre of Bone Marrow Donor Volunteers University of Patras (CBMDP)” (www.xarisezoi.gr) and the “Institute of Cellular Therapy” (www.ictpatras.gr). I have spent a research sabbatical year (2012) at the National Institutes of Health, USA (Prof. J. Barrett’s Lab) working on the clinical establishment of cell therapies. I founded and I am currently the Director of the international MSc Program “Cell and Gene Therapies: from Bench to Bedside and Good Manufacturing Practices“ (www.mastercgt.com).
I am/was Board Member of the Hellenic Society of Hematology (HSH), Founding and Board Member of the “Hellenic Society of Gene Therapy and Regenerative Medicine”, Advisory Board Member of the BMT Committee of the Hellenic National Transplant Organization,
President of the BMT Scientific Group of the HSH and Board Member of the Scientific Council of the Prefecture of Western Greece. Outside Greece, I am/was Hellenic Representative in European Union in “Tissues and Cells” Section, Co-leader of the RIC-Committee of Acute Leukemia Working Party (ALWP) of EBMT, Board Member of the “Centre of the Study of Haematological Malignancies, Cyprous”, Inspector of the JACIE/EBMT for Cell Therapies and Mentor at the H-Net Masterclass of the European Haematology Association (EHA I have multiple publications and chapters in international books, have received national and international awards and have research grants from multiple sources, mainly in the field of leukemias and cellular therapy.
I am/was Associated Editor in many journals including “Bone Marrow Transplantation” and have contributed to the prestigious “How I treat” series in ranking 1 Heamatology Journal Blood.
